Veneers pave the way for a perfect smile, and to fill gaps between teeth, boost self-confidence, and revitalize worn or aged teeth. Getting veneers is also an ideal, non-invasive option compared to other dental procedures. A prosthodontist specializes in veneers.
The wellbeing of your teeth influences more than just your oral health, it affects the way your live your life. We at the office of Carolina Prosthodontics & Implant Dentistry understand this and are here for you. Think of us as the gatekeepers of your prosthodontic team. We listen to your needs, and help your teeth look and feel their best.
If you decide that veneers are the right choice for you, here’s the lowdown. The prosthodontist will help you decide which version best meets your needs.
Veneers are stain-resistant resin-based composite or porcelain covers that are glued to the front of your teeth. The resin-based composite veneers, also called direct veneers, are applied to the teeth in a single visit.
Porcelain veneers, also called indirect veneers, are custom-made to fit your teeth. You need to see a prosthodontist twice. At the first visit, your teeth will be fit for the veneers; the second time around, the veneers will be put in place. Composites are thinner—so less tooth surface needs to be removed before they’re applied—but porcelains are more stain-resistant and natural-looking.
The prosthodontist X-rays your teeth. He (or she) then trims about half a millimeter off the bottom or top of each tooth’s enamel. He takes an impression or mold of your teeth and sends it to a lab that makes the veneers.
One to two weeks later, when the veneers are back from the lab, the prosthodontist checks the veneers’ fit and color. He preps your teeth by cleaning them thoroughly and then roughens their surfaces to enhance the veneers’ adhesion. The veneer is attached to the tooth with a dental cement, and an ultraviolet light quickly hardens it. The prosthodontist will see you a few weeks later to ensure that the veneers fit well and look perfect.
